G.O.P. Senator Blocking Promotion of General Who Commanded Afghan Withdrawal

Republican Senator Josh Hawley is facing backlash after blocking the promotion of Major General Christopher Donahue, who led the successful evacuation of American troops from Afghanistan last month.

Donahue, who currently serves as the commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division, played a crucial role in overseeing the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan as part of President Biden’s plan to end America’s longest war. Despite facing numerous challenges, including a deadly suicide bombing at the Kabul airport, Donahue and his team successfully evacuated over 120,000 people, including American citizens, Afghan allies, and vulnerable Afghans seeking refuge.

However, Hawley has put a hold on Donahue’s promotion to the rank of lieutenant general, citing concerns over the Biden administration’s handling of the withdrawal. In a statement, Hawley criticized the administration for what he called a “botched withdrawal” and questioned the decision to leave Americans and allies behind in Afghanistan.

Many have condemned Hawley’s actions, arguing that his decision to block Donahue’s promotion is a political move that undermines the military’s chain of command and the principle of civilian control over the military. Retired Army Colonel Mark Hertling tweeted, “It’s disgusting that a Senator would interfere with a military promotion because of politics. It’s also against the law.”

Hawley’s move has also been met with criticism from military leaders and lawmakers on both sides of the aisle. General Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, expressed his support for Donahue and called him a “heroic, fearless leader.”

Senator Tammy Duckworth, a Democrat and combat veteran, called Hawley’s actions “shameful” and urged him to reconsider his decision. “Blocking the promotion of a military officer based on politics is unacceptable and undermines the integrity of our armed forces,” Duckworth said in a statement.

It remains to be seen how this controversy will play out, but one thing is clear: Major General Christopher Donahue’s leadership and bravery in overseeing the successful evacuation of American troops from Afghanistan deserve to be recognized and honored, regardless of the political motivations of some lawmakers.
